World Malaria Day falls on 25th April 2020. The world is battling the COVID 19 pandemic. But the age old problems should not be forgotten. Malaria is still causing more than 400,000 deaths world wide. Sri Lanka eliminated Malaria in 2012 and sustained the zero indigenous cases for the 8th consecutive year.

Malaria is imported to Sri Lanka from endemic countries. In 2019, there were 53 imported cases, parasitic surveillance had done more than 1.1 million blood smears throughout the country and entomological surveillance had been carried out routinely in every district.  Upto now in 2020 there are 9 imported cases.
The strategies that are much talked now for combating COVID 19 has always been the strategy for eliminating Malaria too. The AMC had always been supporting the regional staff, conducting training to maintain skill levels and advocacy to maintain committement of all stakeholders.
On this day, the AMC thanks all the staff and stakeholders who contiues to play a vital role in sustaining the zero indigenous malaria in Sri Lanka. We would like to remind our clinicians to suspect Malaria in patients with fever and travel history to an endemic country, test, treat and conduct surveillance to assess the risk of spread. We would like to emphasize to all Sri Lankans to take prophylaxis when travelling to malaria endemic countries, adhere to measures to prevent mosquito bites and seek early diagnosis if developed fever.
Let's all come together to keep Sri Lanka malaria free.
